Our Qualifications

We are a private nursery school approved by the New York State Education Department, and we are licensed to give child care by the New York Department of Social Services, serving children from infancy to kindergarten. Our hand-selected staff are first aid and CPR trained and have undergone child abuse and professional training. Our teachers are licensed by the state in early childhood education. Our staff and facilities have been created to build a solid backbone for a place of warmth, creativity, and insight.

Health and Safety Features

We have a range of health and safety features that ensure the children in our care are safe. Some of the main features include:
  • A Nassau County Board of Health “Certified Cook and Food Handler”
  • Periodic inspection of our fire-resistant building by the Nassau County Fire Marshall Office and monthly fire drills
  • Central fire and burglary station
  • Camera and communication systems for easy communication and transparency
  • Ensure healthy, nutritious, and fun meals and snacks
  • High teacher-student ratios
  • Fenced outdoor playgrounds
  • Visits by a registered nurse
  • Before enrollment, children and staff have medical examinations
  • Hearing, vision, speech, and language screenings
  • Students and staff wear special shirts for trips

Teaching Safety

Not only do we facilitate a safe and encouraging environment for kids, but The Wooden Shoe also ensures that children learn skills that help them learn safe habits and learn how to promote safety for themselves and the people around them. We ensure all safety lessons are age-appropriate and targeted to the child’s level of understanding. Some safety lessons we teach include:
  • Medicine chest safety
  • Pedestrian, vehicle, and bus safety
  • Lessons from nurses, dentists, policemen, firemen, and other professionals
  • Water conservation, recycling, and other environmental safety lessons
  • Stranger awareness and social safety
  • Smoking and alcohol awareness

The Wooden Shoe wants each child to feel secure and welcome in our nursery school. We are a non-sectarian program that observes multi-ethnic holidays. We celebrate and talk about each holiday to promote an environment that fits the cultural needs of each child and builds an inclusive and non-judgmental environment for children of all backgrounds. Our holistic, non-competitive atmosphere encourages children to be the best they can be while learning to interact productively with other children.

Minibus Transportation System

Our minibus system helps children get to school. Our transportation system undergoes the requirements of the New York State Department of Transportation, and our drivers our New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Certified. We are in constant connection with our drivers if need be, and all children are required to use the appropriate car seat under federal law.

Our Mission Statement

The Wooden Shoe believes that families are integral parts of communities, including little ones gradually learning to be independent and already engaging. Our team of educational experts helps children align their bodies, minds, and souls, taking a holistic approach to child development and making well-adjusted and active citizens. Learning starts when a baby is born, and we can give our students the best possible start to learning. Over our years of providing care and learning, we have helped thousands of students gain a strong foundation, and we want to help thousands more.
